This photograph captures a scene of daily life in downtown Alexandria during its heyday as a global cultural and commercial hub on the Mediterranean. The image shows cafes lining the sidewalks, buildings with European architectural styles, and streets teeming with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. On the right is the sign for The St. James’s, a hotel and cafe frequented by many foreigners and residents of the city at the time, hence the American flag displayed above the facade. This was not unusual at the time, as Alexandria was a city open to the world, welcoming people from Europe, the East, and the Mediterranean, and bringing them together in a vibrant urban space. Sitting in sidewalk cafes was part of the Alexandrian way of life, where languages, cultures, clothing, and faces mingled in a single scene that reflected the identity of this open coastal city. Alexandria… a city that spoke many languages and preserved the spirit of history in its streets.
