Alexandria National Museum
From the Palace of Alexandria's Richest Timber Merchant to a Museum Telling the Story of Egypt Through the Ages! The Alexandria National Museum was originally a luxurious palace built in the Italian style for the wealthy merchant Asaad Basili, who lived there until 1954, before it was sold to the American Embassy and used as the consulate for a period. In 1996, the Supreme Council of Antiquities purchased the palace and undertook a comprehensive restoration. It officially opened as a museum in 2003, housing artifacts from the Dynastic Period to the New Kingdom, hence its name, the "Alexandria National Museum." The museum contains approximately 1,800 diverse artifacts, spanning from the Old Kingdom through the Middle Ages to the modern era, showcasing the evolution of Egyptian civilization, its arts, and industries. Among the most prominent exhibits are a statue of an Egyptian scribe, a collection of vessels found inside the Pyramid of Djoser, statues of Queen Hatshepsut, King Akhenaten, Thutmose III, and Ramses II, as well as statues of the god Amun. The museum features a special hall dedicated to underwater antiquities, where visitors can see rare pieces recovered from the sea, such as a statue of the goddess Isis and a statue of one of her priests, along with marble statues and portraits of Greek deities, such as Venus, and a head of Alexander the Great. The museum also houses halls displaying coins from various periods and Islamic artifacts, including weapons and objects made of metal, glass, and ceramics, as well as gold, silver, and jewelry belonging to the Muhammad Ali dynasty. Currently, visitors can enjoy two temporary exhibitions: the Underwater Antiquities Exhibition and the Fouad Memory Exhibition, showcasing unique photographs and artifacts that enrich the visit and add to its historical significance.
