Alexandria – 1920s

This photograph captures a scene of daily life in downtown Alexandria during its heyday as a global cultural and commercial hub on the Mediterranean. The image shows cafes lining the sidewalks, buildings with European architectural styles, and streets teeming with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. On the right is the sign for The St. James’s, a hotel and cafe frequented by many foreigners and residents of the city at the time, hence the American flag displayed above the facade.
