Alexandria indemnity payment
140 years ago, following the events of the Urabi Revolution that erupted in 1882, the city of Alexandria was bombarded by British forces, marking the beginning of 70 years of British occupation in Egypt. These clashes, which lasted for several hours until sunset, resulted in devastating losses. Nevertheless, the Egyptian issue became a subject of great interest in the West, as journalists and British illustrators documented and portrayed those moments and movements throughout the streets. Among the newspapers covering the events were The Illustrated London News and The Graphic. As a consequence of these losses, what became known as “The Payment of Alexandrian Indemnity” was imposed. A full committee was established to inspect and assess the damages and distribute compensation, which was paid from the treasury of the Egyptian government to the British.
