The Library of Alexandria: A beacon of knowledge and an incubator of the future... An insider's perspective

لا يمكن لزائر الإسكندرية أن يغفل عن ذلك الصرح الأسطواني الشامخ الذي يواجه البحر، لكن بالنسبة لي، مكتبة الإسكندرية ليست مجرد مزار سياحي أو عمارة استثنائية، بل هي "مدرسة" شكلت جزءاً كبيراً من وعيي. ومن خلال دوري كمصور وموثق، أردت أن أنقل لكم هذه المرة صورة من "داخل" كواليس العمل التنموي والأكاديمي في هذا الصرح العظيم.
بوابة الشباب نحو التنمية المستدامة
من خلال تجربتي الشخصية كمتطوع في "برنامج دراسات التنمية المستدامة وبناء قدرات الشباب" بقطاع البحث الأكاديمي، أدركت أن المكتبة اليوم هي القوة الناعمة الحقيقية لمصر. البرنامج لا يقدم فقط مادة علمية، بل يعمل على صقل مهارات القيادة لدى الشباب، وربطهم بأهداف التنمية المستدامة العالمية (SDGs)، وهو ما يجعل من المكتبة شريكاً أساسياً في بناء "الجمهورية الجديدة" بعقول شابة واعية.
الإسكندرية.. جسر التواصل الأفريقي
من أبرز الملفات التي تشرفت بالاطلاع عليها ومواكبتها داخل المكتبة، هو ملف دعم العلاقات الأفريقية. المكتبة لا تعمل ككيان محلي فحسب، بل هي جسر أكاديمي يمتد لعمق القارة السمراء. من خلال برامج بناء قدرات الباحثين الأفارقة، تتحول الإسكندرية مرة أخرى إلى نقطة تلاقي للثقافات والخبرات الأكاديمية من كل أنحاء أفريقيا، مما يعيد للمدينة دورها التاريخي كعاصمة للعلم والمعرفة في القارة.
بين الرفوف والواقع: دروس لا تنسى
التطوع في مكتبة الإسكندرية هو رحلة استكشافية للذات قبل أن تكون للبحث. هنا تعلمت أن الأرشفة والتوثيق هما "حراس التاريخ". فكل ورشة عمل، وكل ندوة عن التنمية المستدامة، هي لبنة في بناء مستقبل أفضل. إن وجودي داخل هذا الكيان جعلني أرى الإسكندرية ليس فقط كمدينة ذات ماضٍ عريق، بل كمدينة تمتلك أدوات المستقبل من خلال مكتبتها العظيمة.
كلمة للمستقبل
بصفتي ابناً لهذه المدينة وموثقاً في أرشيفها، أرى أن مكتبة الإسكندرية هي المكان الذي يتصالح فيه التاريخ مع الحداثة. أدعو كل شاب سكندري ألا يكتفي بزيارة المكتبة للقراءة فقط، بل ليبحث عن الفرص التنموية والبرامج الأكاديمية التي تقدمها، لأنها قادرة على تغيير مسار حياتك المهنية والشخصية تماماً كما فعلت معي.

No visitor to Alexandria can fail to notice that magnificent cylindrical landmark facing the sea. But for me, Bibliotheca Alexandrina is not merely a tourist attraction or an exceptional architectural masterpiece—it is a “school” that shaped a significant part of my awareness and personal growth. Through my role as a photographer and documentarian, I wanted this time to share a view from inside the scenes of developmental and academic work within this great institution.
A Gateway for Youth Toward Sustainable Development
Through my personal experience as a volunteer in the Sustainable Development Studies and Youth Capacity Building Program within the Academic Research Sector, I realized that the library today is one of Egypt’s true soft powers. The program does not only provide academic knowledge, but also develops leadership skills among young people and connects them with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This makes the library an essential partner in building Egypt’s “New Republic” through aware and capable young minds.
Alexandria… A Bridge of African Communication
Among the most important initiatives I had the honor to observe and follow inside the library was its support for African relations. The library does not function merely as a local institution—it is an academic bridge extending deep into the African continent. Through programs aimed at building the capacities of African researchers, Alexandria once again becomes a meeting point for cultures and academic expertise from across Africa, restoring the city’s historic role as a capital of knowledge and learning on the continent.
Between the Shelves and Reality: Unforgettable Lessons
Volunteering at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a journey of self-discovery before it is a journey of research. Here, I learned that archiving and documentation are the true guardians of history. Every workshop and every seminar on sustainable development is a brick in the construction of a better future. My presence within this institution made me see Alexandria not only as a city with a glorious past, but as a city that possesses the tools of the future through its great library.
A Word to the Future
As a son of this city and a documentarian of its archive, I see the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as the place where history reconciles with modernity. I invite every young Alexandrian not to visit the library only for reading, but to seek the developmental opportunities and academic programs it offers—because they are truly capable of changing the course of your professional and personal life, just as they changed mine.
