كلمة اليوم كان يتم سماعها قديماً في كل الأحياء السكنية الغني منها و الفقير و مازالت مستمرة في بعض المناطق ، «روبابيكيا» كلمة مصرية عامة لكنها إيطالية الأصل "Roba Vecchia" .
فكلمة «روبا» تعني ملابس ، وكلمة «بيكيا» تعني قديم أو مستعمل في اللغة الإيطالية ، و تداولت الكلمة بين العمال المصريين مع تحريفها لصعوبة نطق حرف الـ "V" في اللغة العربية ، فأصبحت تشير إلى مهنة تجارة الملابس أو الأشياء القديمة المستهلكة و في بعض الأحيان كان يستخدم البائع كلمة «بيكيا» كتصغير بدل من كلمة «روبابيكيا» .
كان يجول البائع في الشوارع جاراً عربية خشبية أو ذات موتور مع تقدم الوقت ، يجمع الأثاث القديم و الملابس و الخردوات الخشبية و النحاسية و الألومنيومية ، كانت تجارة رابحة لكل الأطراف ، حيث يتخلص الناس من الأشياء التي لم تعد تستخدم و تباع إلى المحتاجين بأسعار رمزية و يأخذ البائع ربحه و ينتهي اليوم و الرضا بقلوب جميع الأطراف.
عمل بمهنة الروبابيكيا الكثير من المصريين الذي لم يحالفهم الحظ بوظائف دائمة ، فهي لا تطلب مهارات تعجيزية سوا الذكاء الإجتماعي و مهارة الإقناع و الصبر ، فيبدأ التاجر رحلته من العدم حتى يتحول إلى واحد من أغنياء المجتمع .

The Story of a Word
Today's word was commonly heard in both wealthy and poor neighborhoods in the past and is still used in some areas: "Roba Bikia." This is a general Egyptian term with Italian origins, "Roba Vecchia."
In Italian, "Roba" means clothes, and "Vecchia" means old or used. The term was adopted by Egyptian workers and adapted due to the difficulty of pronouncing the letter "V" in Arabic, eventually coming to refer to the trade of old or used clothes and items. Sometimes, vendors would use the term "Bikia" as a diminutive of "Roba Bikia."
Vendors would roam the streets with wooden carts or, over time, motorized vehicles, collecting old furniture, clothes, and scrap materials like wood, copper, and aluminum. This trade was profitable for everyone involved: people got rid of items they no longer used, which were sold to those in need at nominal prices, and the vendors made a profit, ending the day with satisfaction on all sides.
Many Egyptians who did not have the fortune of stable jobs worked in this field. It did not require extraordinary skills, only social intelligence, persuasion, and patience. Many started from scratch and went on to become wealthy members of society.
