Buildings, objects, memories, and many other things have faded with time, even professions. Some have disappeared and been forgotten, and one of the most famous of these professions is that of the "water carrier."

So, who was the water carrier?

This was the person who transported water from reservoirs and rivers to mosques, schools, homes, and public drinking fountains (sabil), before the modern development of water delivery to houses and buildings. They would settle near water sources, primarily the Nile River.

The water carrier would carry water skins and a set of jugs to deliver water to the people. He would go from house to house calling out, "May God compensate us," and those who needed water would call him. He would charge a fee that did not exceed two millimes. To collect his payment, he would mark the door of the person he dealt with with lines corresponding to the number of water skins he delivered. Sometimes, he would use strings of blue beads, removing one bead for each water skin he delivered until he ran out of beads, then he would settle his account.

During the time of al-Jabarti and the French Campaign, water carriers were divided into five guilds, each with its own sheikh who oversaw its affairs and organized its work.

Two guilds were located in Bab al-Luq, one transporting water on camels and the other on donkeys. There was also the Bab al-Bahr guild, the Harat al-Saqqayin guild, and the Qanatir al-Siba' guild. A sixth guild was known as the Kizan.

This profession began to gradually disappear from 1865 onwards, with the onset of urban development, the establishment of the water company, and the introduction of pumps and pipes to distribute water within the city. However, the water carriers did not disappear entirely; more than 68 informal settlements around Cairo still lacked access to clean water.
