لعبت الإسكندرية دور كبير في تشكيل روحه الفنية ، المخرج "يوسف شاهين"
كانت الإسكندرية مسقط رأس يوسف شاهين حيث ولد فيها عام 1926 بتاريخ 25 يناير ، كانت عائلته مسيحية كاثوليكية فكان والده من أصول لبنانية و والدته يونانية ، درس في كلية سان مارك ثم كلية فيكتوريا في المرحلة الثانوية ، ثم أكمل مسيرته كممثل مسرح في معهد (پاسادينا پلاي هاوس - Pasadena Play House) في كاليفورنيا.
حظي علي حياة متفتحة فكرياً و فنياً و ساعده علي ذلك وجوده بالإسكندرية حيث أنها كانت تضم مختلف الثقافات و اللغات و الجنسيات ، مما ساعده علي الوصول للمهرجانات العالمية بشكل أسرع عن غيره و وصل ابداعه الي النقاد الغربيين .
كان رائد من رواد السينما المصرية بشكل خاص و العربية بشكل عام ، اعتمد في كثير من أفلامه علي الوجوه الجديدة كممثلين و كمخرجين مساعدين له الذي أبدعوا في حياتهم بعده ، كانوا يعملوا علي مواكبة حياة الشعب المصري و تضمن هذا مواكبة الإحتلال البريطاني و الحياة السياسية الرئاسية فيما بعده ، بدأ رحلته في الإخراج السينمائي عام 1950 بفيلم "بابا أمين" ، ثم تطورت أعماله و اتخذت أنماط مختلفة مثل : الميلودراما، الكوميديا الخفيفة، الفيلم التاريخي، الفيلم السياسي، المأساة الغنائية، السيرة الذاتية، والأفلام التسجيلية.
بدأ أفلامه السياسية بعد ثورة 23 يوليو التي ساعدت علي تفتح اعينه علي العالم السياسي و وعيه به ، ثم لجأ الي الافلام التاريخية عام 1985 مع فيلم "جميلة" ، كما أنه كان من القلائل الذي اتقنوا توظيف الأغنيات و الاستعراضات الراقصة في سياق الدراما و الفيلم ، مما جعله يحصل علي العديد من الجوائز في المهرجانات المحلية و العالمية و كان أهمهم جائزة "الإنجاز العام مهرجان كان السينمائي عام 1997" لمجمل أعماله الفنية
توفي يوسف شاهين عن 82 عاما في القاهرة في 27 يوليو 2008 نتيجة غيبوبة دامت 6 اسابيع بعد فشل محاولات علاجه في باريس و دفن في مدينته الإسكندرية في مقابر الروم الكاثوليك بالشاطبي .

Alexandria was the birthplace of Youssef Chahine, where he was born on January 25, 1926. His family was Catholic, with his father being of Lebanese origin and his mother Greek. He studied at Saint Mark’s College and then at Victoria College for his secondary education before continuing his acting career at the Pasadena Playhouse in California.
He enjoyed a broadly open intellectual and artistic life, aided by Alexandria’s diverse cultures, languages, and nationalities. This exposure helped him reach international festivals faster and brought his creativity to Western critics.
Chahine was a pioneer of Egyptian cinema in particular and Arab cinema in general. He often cast new faces as actors and assistant directors in his films, who went on to have successful careers. They worked to reflect the life of the Egyptians , including criticizing the British occupation and subsequent political changes. He began his filmmaking career in 1950 with the film "Papa Amin" and later evolved his work into various styles, including melodrama, light comedy, historical films, political films, musical tragedies, biopics, and documentaries.
His political films started after the July 23 Revolution, which opened his eyes to the political world. He turned to historical films in 1985 with "Jamila." He was also one of the few who mastered the integration of songs and dance performances into the narrative, earning numerous awards at local and international festivals. Notably, he received the "Overall Achievement Award" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 for his entire work.
Youssef Chahine passed away at the age of 82 in Cairo on July 27, 2008, following a six-week coma after unsuccessful treatment attempts in Paris. He was buried in his hometown of Alexandria in the Catholic Roman Cemetery in Shatby
