The Eastern Harbor is one of the most important ports in Egypt and one of the oldest ports in the world. Located on the eastern coast of Alexandria, it stretches from the Silsila area in Shatby to the Citadel of Qaitbay in Bahri. Its history dates back to the founding of Alexandria by Alexander the Great, as it was the first structure built in the city and the reason for its establishment from the beginning.
The port is a vital center for maritime trade and manages shipping between Egypt and other countries.
The Eastern Harbor contains a large collection of submerged archaeological sites, including the remains of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, the old royal quarter, and the ruins of the first churches built in Alexandria.
The Eastern Harbor area also includes the Library of Alexandria, the former World Health Organization building in the Shatby district, the Citadel of Qaitbay, and the distinctive clubs in the Bahri district.
The harbor's stone wall was built in 1905 during the reign of Khedive Abbas Hilmi. An Italian company designed the wall after the first two rows of buildings were filled in.
It extended from the Citadel of Qaitbay to the Montazah area.
Alexandria Governorate witnessed the collapse of rock blocks from the ancient wall, reopening the issue of the neglect of the Eastern Harbor.
The governorate has begun preparing a file to designate it as a heritage site.
The Alexandria Heritage Council is currently preparing a file to nominate the Eastern Harbor for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List, as one of the three most important heritage sites in Alexandria, along with Kom El-Dikka and Montazah.
A large number of gold and silver coins, jewelry, and gold rings have been recovered from the depths of the Eastern Harbor, which contains 60% of Alexandria's submerged antiquities. The Eastern Harbor has also been subjected to numerous encroachment attempts, including the appropriation of a section to be converted into a parking garage opposite the Maritime Court. However, protests from those concerned with heritage buildings led the governorate to abandon the project and restore the site to its original state.
The rock wall is currently neglected due to a lack of regular maintenance. It is not yet registered in the heritage register and is not under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Antiquities.
