The Epic of the Rock: When Brigadier General Magdi Bishara requested that his position be bombed to bury the enemy
Eslam Ali —
In the history of the Egyptian military, battles stand out that are not measured by the amount of equipment, but by the magnitude of courage and the ability to tame the impossible. Among these immortal pages comes the Battle of Green Island (July 19, 1969), the details of which were retold by the hero, Major General Magdy Beshara, to respond to every doubter of the Egyptian fighter's doctrine.
Israeli Planning: "Breaking Nasserism's Nose"
Green Island was not just a military site; rather, it was a rocky fortress in the middle of the Suez waters protecting the city from air raids. Israel planned to occupy it in conjunction with the anniversary of the July 23 Revolution and the event of the first man landing on the moon, with the aim of achieving a moral victory that would break the pride of the Egyptian state. The enemy prepared with a commando battalion and a company of frogmen trained in the United States for 3 months, thinking that a surprise attack with 800 soldiers would settle the battle against only 100 Egyptian soldiers.
The Decision of Military "Madness"
When the siege intensified and ammunition ran out, and Captain Magdy Beshara was left with only 24 steadfast soldiers, he made a decision taught by military history: > "Open the Second Army's artillery on the site... it is better for us to die than for the island to fall." It was a request for military suicide for the sake of national sovereignty. The Egyptian soldiers took cover in the bunkers, while the Egyptian artillery fire rained down on the heads of the Israelis who had already begun climbing the rock. The enemy could not withstand the hell of the double fire, so they retreated leaving behind dozens of dead and wounded, and our heroes chased them with two cannons that sank their boats in the open sea.
Numbers of Light and Fire
The confrontation, which extended for two days (July 19 and 20), resulted in heavy losses for the enemy, according to the testimony of international sources:
62 killed and 110 wounded Israelis (by their own admission).
Shooting down 17 Israeli aircraft during intensive retaliatory raids.
Shooting down two "Mirage" aircraft by the cannon of Corporal Mohamed Ibrahim El-Dardiry alone.
Ibrahim El-Rifai... Present in the Heart of the Siege
The narrative was not devoid of a harsh human touch; as Beshara mentioned the visit of the commando legend Ibrahim El-Rifai to the site under siege, to save the soldier Mohamed Zaky Abdo, whose entrails were outside his body and his arm was under a rock weighing 20 tons. In a dramatic scene, El-Rifai was forced to amputate the soldier's arm to save his life, so that the hero "Mohamed" would return months later and knock on the door of his commander Beshara, revealing the miracle of Egyptian steadfastness.
The tears of the hero Magdy Beshara while narrating this epic were not weakness, but rather loyalty to the comrades in arms who drew with their blood the borders of the homeland on a solid rock in the middle of the water. "Green Island" remains a witness that the Egyptian army knows no impossible, and that the dignity of the land is more precious than life.
