In the heart of Alexandria, specifically in the Kom El Shoqafa area, stands a unique archaeological landmark known as the "Column of the Sarai" or "Pompey's Pillar," one of Egypt's most famous historical monuments.
The name "Sarai" is derived from the word "Sewar," meaning column, while some believe it is a distortion of a European word. As for its designation as "Pompey's Pillar," it has no real connection to the Roman general Pompey.
The column was constructed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, following his suppression of a revolt in Alexandria in 297 AD. Due to his distribution of grain to the population during a famine, the column was erected in his honor.
The site of the column once housed the Ptolemaic Serapeum temple, which was destroyed over the centuries, leaving only the column and a few statues, including two sphinx statues.
Beyond its historical significance, the column is shrouded in popular legends. Some believe it was built with the help of supernatural beings and that a golden treasure lies buried beneath it, guarded by spirits to this day. Many stories tell of people who attempted to uncover the treasure but encountered eerie phenomena, such as hearing frightening sounds, seeing moving shadows, and even experiencing sudden disappearances.
For these reasons, some locals in the past avoided passing by the column at night, reporting mysterious lights or whispers, reinforcing the belief that unseen forces protect the site.
Although these legends are not scientifically proven, they have added an aura of mystery to the column, making it not just a historical monument but a meeting point between reality and myth.
