Prince Ismail Sherine: The Last Minister of War in the Monarchical Era
Prince Ismail Sherine was a member of the Muhammad Ali dynasty and a cousin of King Fuad I, the King of Egypt and Sudan. He married Princess Fawzia, the sister of King Farouk, and had two children, Nadia and Hussein.
Born on October 17, 1919, he was raised in a royal family and pursued his education at the University of Cambridge, where he studied political economy. After graduating, he worked at the National Bank of Egypt before serving as a secretary in the Council of Ministers. Later, he was appointed to the Ministry of Defense as an officer.
He held the position of Minister of War in Hussein Sirri’s government during the reign of King Farouk and was the last to occupy this role before the July 23, 1952 Revolution. He was also part of the Egyptian delegation involved in military and political negotiations with Britain regarding the evacuation of British forces from Egyptian territory.
Prince Ismail Sherine played a role in discussions on modernizing the Egyptian army before the revolution, aligning himself with the royalist faction loyal to the monarchy. However, with the rapid developments following the July 23, 1952 Revolution, his political and military career came to an abrupt end. He chose to retire from political life entirely and lived away from the public eye until his passing on June 14, 1994, at the age of 74.
