تعددت المصادر اللغوية حول أصل كلمة "تاكسي" فهي :
كلمة "Taxe" الفرنسية وتعني "ضريبة" وتشير إلى الأجرة التي يدفعها الراكب في المقابل ، وكلمة "Taximeter" الألمانية وهي كلمة مركبة من كلمتي "ضريبة" و "عداد" وتشير إلى الجهاز الذي يحسب الأجرة ، وكلمة "Taxi cab" الإنجليزية وهي كلمة مركبة من "أجرة" و "عربة" وتشير إلى نوع العربة المستخدمة.
وعكست كل هذه المصادر المراحل التي مرت بها كلمة "تاكسي" عبر الثقافات المختلفة ، حيث بدأت بالإشارة إلى الأجرة ثم إلى الجهاز الذي يحسبها وصولاً إلى نوع العربة.
وظهرت كلمة تاكسي في اللغة الإنجليزية في أوائل القرن العشرين ، وأول سيارة أجرة مزودة بعداد تم تصنيعها في ألمانيا عام 1897 وتم تركيب عدادات لسيارات الأجرة في باريس عام 1898م.
