البكالوريا شهادة تعليمية تعكس التطور البشري فهي تعُود أصل كلمة "بكالوريا" إلى اللغة اللاتينية، وتعني "الشهادة الجامعية" أو "شاهد العلم" ، وكانت تشير في البداية إلى شهادة تمنح للطلاب بعد اجتيازهم فترة دراسية في الجامعة وانتشرت الكلمة في العديد من الدول خاصةً في الدول العربية التي تأثرت بالنظام التعليمي الفرنسي.
تطورت البكالوريا لتصبح الشهادة التي تُمنح بعد إتمام المرحلة الثانوية ، وهي مفتاح دخول الجامعات والكليات ؛ ويرجع تسميه هذه الشهادة بالبكالوريا إلى كونها تمثل شاهداً على علم الطالب وقدراته ، وتؤهله للإنتقال إلى مرحلة التعليم العالي.
قد تختلف قيمة البكالوريا وطريقة الحصول عليها من دولة إلى أخرى، ولكنها بشكل عام تمثل إنجازًا أكاديميًا مهمًا ، ففي بعض الدول تزيد فرص حصولها على وظائف أفضل وأكثر استقراراً وشرط أساسي للإلتحاق بالجامعات والمعاهد العليا.
