مع بداية كل عام يحتفل العالم بمختلف الطرق، كلٌ يتبع ثقافته في الاحتفال و إبداء مظاهر الفرح، و عندما يأتي الأمر إلى الإسكندرية فنرى أنها متأثرة بالثقافة اليونانية، و ما زال تتبنى عادات و تقاليد توضح مدى ذلك التأثر.
قبل نحو 200 عام، بدأت الجالية اليونانية في الإسكندرية إحياء تقاليد الاحتفال بالعام الجديد بطرق مميزة. كان الأهالي يحتفلون بتكسير الزجاج والأواني الفخارية عند منتصف الليل في 31 ديسمبر، كرمز لتوديع العام القديم واستقبال العام الجديد. في البداية، اقتصرت العادة على ترك الحطام بالقرب من المنازل لتستفيد منه المارة، مع ترك العملات المعدنية في الطرق كجزء من الاحتفالات التي كانت تعكس البهجة بتجديد الفصول والأمل في العام المقبل.
نبعت تلك العادة من المعتقدات اليونانية التي كانت ترى أن تحطيم الأواني الزجاجية هي الطريقة المثلى لطرد الطاقات السلبية وإبعاد الشرور مع بداية العام الجديد. كان يُعتقد أن هذه العادات تجلب الحظ الجيد وتساعد في تجديد الحياة. ومع مرور الوقت، تطورت مظاهر الإحتفال، فاستبدل البعض الزجاج بالمياه، حيث كانوا يلقون أكياس المياه في الشوارع. لكن مؤخرًا أصبحت الألعاب النارية هي الاختيار الأكثر شيوعًا بعد تراجع فكرة تحطيم الأواني تجنبًا للأضرار، كما ان لتأثيرها البصري دوراً هاماً في ذلك حيث ان ألوانها المبهجة تجعلها امثل اختيار للأغلب.

At the beginning of each year, people around the world celebrate in various ways, each following their own cultural traditions. In Alexandria, the influence of Greek culture is evident, and many customs continue to reflect this impact.
Around 200 years ago, the Greek community in Alexandria began celebrating the New Year with distinctive traditions. Locals would break glass and pottery at midnight on December 31, symbolizing the farewell to the old year and the welcome of the new. Initially, the practice involved leaving the shattered pieces near homes for passersby to benefit from, along with coins placed in the streets as part of the celebrations that reflected joy in the renewal of seasons and hope for the coming year.
This tradition stemmed from Greek beliefs that breaking glassware was the ideal way to ward off negative energies and banish evil as the new year began. It was thought that these actions would bring good luck and help renew life. Over time, the celebration practices evolved. Some people replaced glass with water, throwing bags of water into the streets. However, in recent years, fireworks have become the most popular choice after the decline of the pottery-breaking tradition, as they are less damaging and offer a vibrant visual display that enhances the festive atmosphere.
