كلما تعمقنا في لغتنا وجدنا أن كلمات كثيرة تستخدم بشكل معتاد ولا ندري أن أصولها ليست عربية في الأساس ولكنها انتقلت واندمجت في حديثنا وصارت جزءًا من لهجتنا المعتادة وأحدهم هي كلمة «شكمجية».
وهي كلمة أصلها تركي انتقلت إلى اللغة العربية خلال العصر العثماني ولازالت تستخدم حتى يومنا هذا ، وتعني المكان الآمن الذي يُخزن فيه الأشياء ، وأصبحت بعد ذلك تشير إلى الصندوق الخشبي المنقوش المزين بالصدف أو العاج .
وكان الأكثر شيوعاً في استخدامها هو حفظ المجوهرات الثمينة للنساء من أساور وخواتم وقلائد بشكل أنيق فيمكن إغلاقها بإحكام للحفاظ على محتوياتها بعيداً عن الأنظار ، واستخدمت أيضًا لحفظ التحف الصغيرة والمقتنيات الثمينة كالعملات القديمة أو الحلي التراثية واستخدمت في التزيين وكانت هدية مثالية في المناسبات الخاصة.
وصُممت الشكمجية على شكل فريد مع الزخارف والنقوش مما جعلها قطعة فنية قيمة بحد ذاتها ، فكانت رمزاً للثراء والوضع الإجتماعي الرفيع في المجتمع المصري ، وتعتبر جزءًا من التراث الثقافي المصري .

One such word is 'shkamjiya.'
Originating from Turkish, this word made its way into the Arabic language during the Ottoman era and is still used today.
It originally signified a secure place for storing items, but later came to specifically refer to a decorated wooden box adorned with mother-of-pearl or ivory.
Most commonly, shkamjiyas were used to elegantly store women's precious jewelry, such as bracelets, rings, and necklaces. Their tight-fitting lids ensured that their contents were kept safe and out of sight.
They were also used to store small antiques and valuable collectibles like old coins or heirloom jewelry, and were often employed as decorative pieces or given as gifts for special occasions.
With their unique designs and intricate carvings, shkamjiyas were considered valuable works of art in their own right.
They symbolized wealth and high social status in Egyptian society and are now considered part of Egypt's cultural heritage.
