تُعد مهنة السمكري من أقدم المهن التي لا تزال قائمة في الحياة اليومية حتى الآن ، فهي ليست مجرد حرفة يدوية بل إنها تحمل في طياتها تاريخًا طويلًا وتفاصيلاً مختلفة ، كما أن أنواع السمكرة المختلفة تؤدي دورًا هامًا في حياة المجتمعات البشرية.
اختلفت الأقاويل في تفسير كلمة "سمكري" فهناك عدة تفسيرات لذلك فالبعض يعتقد أنها مشتقة من كلمة "zingari" الإيطالية والتي تعني "الغجر" حيث اشتهر الغجر بمهنة السمكرة في بعض المناطق ؛ والبعض يرى أنها مرتبطة بصناعة الصفيح مثل الكيزان والأقماع.
السمكري هو الشخص الذي يعمل على معالجة المعادن مثل الحديد والصاج ، وتصليح الأدوات المصنوعة منها ، والسمكرة هي عملية التشكيل والتعديل للمعادن ويستخدم فيها بعض الأدوات للتقطيع والتشكيل واللحام منها المقص والمنشار الحديد والمطرقة والبنش وجهاز اللحام وقناع اللحام ومفكات ومبرد وأدوات أخرى أساسية وبالإضافة لتلك الأدوات قد يستخدم أدوات أخرى متخصصة وتتطور أدوات السمكرة بإستمرار وقد تظهر أدوات جديدة وأكثر تطوراً في المستقبل.
وهناك عدة أنواع للسمكرة وتختلف بإختلاف المواد المستخدمة ونوع العمل فيوجد سمكرة للسيارات وللأجهزة المنزلية والسمكرة الصناعية وسمكرة الزينة والمجوهرات ، وتختلف التقنيات المستخدمة في كل نوع من هذه الأنواع ولكن بشكل عام يعتمد السمكري على مهاراته اليدوية ومعرفته بالمواد والأدوت اللازمه للعمل.
ولا يزال دور السمكري قائم ومنتشر في أحيائُنا وهناك العديد من المهن بدأت في عصور قديمة وموجودة حتى الآن ولا نعلم من أين بدأت ومتى سيكون لنا لقاءات أخرى نتعرف فيها عن أصل الكلمات والمهن القديمة.
