Smouha is not just a district in Alexandria, but a unique urban story that began on land full of swamps and Lake El-Hadra, and over time transformed into one of the most elegant and important districts of the city. The district was named after its founder, the Iraqi Jewish businessman Joseph Smouha, who managed to turn the place from abandoned land into a modern area combining organized planning, green spaces, and integrated services. Today, the name Smouha has become associated with sophistication and modernity, representing a picture of the new Alexandria that combines past and present.
Who is Joseph Smouha
He is a businessman and pioneer of economy and industry of the first rank, head of the Smouha family, belonging to the Jews of Baghdad in Iraq. He came to Egypt at the beginning of the 20th century to trade in textiles. He is credited with founding Smouha District in Alexandria, in addition to Smouha Club and many companies.
He was born on January 1, 1878 in Baghdad and died on September 22, 1961 in France at the age of 83. He lived in Iraq, Egypt, and the United Kingdom.
Religion: Jewish
Joseph Smouha founded:
Smouha District in 1924 when he requested from the Ministry of Awqaf to obtain usufruct rights over the area where Lake El-Hadra was located (then called Ragab Pasha Saltworks) for an open lifetime period. The area was like a swamp of diseases and unfit for living. The Ministry of Awqaf agreed and allowed him to dispose of the area, despite objections at the time. Smouha had a friendship with King Fuad I, which facilitated his acquisition of the land. He drained the lake and began establishing the Alexandrian district. After the land became his property, he drained Lake El-Hadra and laid out an organized engineering plan for the district. He wanted to honor the king by naming the district “City of Fuad,” but Fuad refused due to the abundance of cities already bearing his name, so the district was named after its founder. At its inception, the district attracted Egyptian Jews who rented many of its architecturally distinguished buildings and organized streets, making it initially a residential area for Alexandria’s elite society.
Smouha District enjoys a very distinguished location in Alexandria, as it lies in the heart of modern Alexandria and at the same time at the southern entrance of the city on the airport highway. It overlooks Sidi Gaber Train Station, one of the two main stations in Alexandria, and is very close to El-Nozha International Airport and El-Nozha Gardens. These multiple advantages led to the flourishing of commercial activity there, until all banks operating in Egypt opened branches in the district. It is surrounded by many neighborhoods:
