The Lycée d'Alexandria was founded in 1909. The initiative originated with the French Consul in Alexandria, who met with members of parliament in 1907, urging them to find a way to establish a secondary school—a secular, private institution for secondary education. A group of parents was formed, and the secular mission nominated Charles Aban, a philosophy teacher, to organize and manage the new institution in Alexandria. They abolished the traditional curriculum. The school was nationalized in 1961 and became part of the Egyptian government, receiving its current name.
Its buildings were erected on land donated by the Alexandria Municipality in the Shatby district.
The school's student body comprised five distinct communities: Greeks, Jews, Syrians, Egyptians, and Armenians.
The school houses a theater, considered one of the most important national theaters in Alexandria. Its facade features an artistic mural entitled "Tarh El-Bahr" (Seafront), covering an area of 86 square meters. It was reopened as a national theater on February 14, 2007, after renovations and the installation of state-of-the-art technology. It has 850 seats and is the first theater in Egypt to have an automatic fire suppression and early warning system.
Over the years, the Lycée Européenne has produced many prominent figures in Egyptian society, including politicians, artists, and writers.
